ElevenLabs

The voice generation engine behind most faceless YouTube channels worth watching. Still the best-in-class on tone, pacing, and emotional range.

WHAT WORKS
  • Voice quality genuinely sounds human, not robotic
  • Voice cloning works with 1-3 minutes of source audio
  • Multilingual output preserves voice identity
  • Stable API for batch generation
WHAT TO WATCH
  • Free tier insufficient for production use
  • Cost ramps quickly at scale (~$0.40-0.80 per 6min video)
  • Some voices over-emote on factual scripts

If you operate a faceless YouTube channel and you're not using ElevenLabs, you're probably using something that sounds worse. We've tested every voice provider that's shipped in the last three years. ElevenLabs still wins on the dimension that actually matters: viewers don't leave because the voice sounds robotic.

What it actually does

ElevenLabs generates synthetic speech from text. You give it a script, it gives you a WAV or MP3 file. You can use one of the prebuilt voices, clone your own voice from 1-3 minutes of source audio, or build a custom voice through their Voice Lab.

The reason it stands out: tone. Other TTS providers (Google, AWS Polly, ElevenLabs' older competitors) produce voices that are technically clear but emotionally flat. ElevenLabs produces voices that breathe, pause, emphasize, and adjust intonation based on punctuation and context.

Where it actually wins

Faceless channel narration. This is the killer use case. If your retention drops because viewers hear "AI voice" in the first 10 seconds and bounce, ElevenLabs is the fix. Across our channels, retention curves are noticeably better with ElevenLabs than with the alternatives we've tested.

Voice cloning. Three minutes of clean source audio and you have a usable clone. The quality is good enough that, for most listeners, the cloned voice is indistinguishable from the original in 8-10 second clips. In longer narration the AI tells start showing up, but for chapter-by-chapter video formats it holds.

Multilingual. Generate a video script in English, then re-render the same voice speaking Spanish, French, German. The voice identity is preserved across languages, which is the unlock for multilingual channel expansion.

Where it can hurt you

The voices over-emote on dry factual content. If your script is a clinical explainer, the "Asher" or "Bella" voice may push too much enthusiasm into a sentence that should be flat. We've had to dial the stability parameter up and the style exaggeration down for documentary-format channels.

Pricing reality check

Free tier: 10,000 characters/month. That's about 10 minutes of audio. Useful for testing, not for production.

Creator plan: $22/mo for 100,000 characters (about 2 hours of audio). Realistic for a 1-video-per-week cadence.

Pro plan: $99/mo for 500,000 characters. Realistic for an operator running 3-5 channels.

At our usage levels (multiple channels, 4-7 minute videos, 3-5 publishes per week), we're running about $40-80/month in API costs. Less than a single freelance voice actor would cost for one video.

Cost per video

For a 6-minute YouTube video script (~1200 words, ~7000 characters), ElevenLabs costs about $0.40-0.80 in API usage on the Pro plan. Compare to a voice actor at $50-200 per video. Math doesn't close.

Stack fit

We pair ElevenLabs with:

  • Descript for any post-processing (rare) or transcript cleanup
  • Submagic for the caption layer
  • Whisper (free) for word-level timing extraction we use in our overlay pipeline

The full audio pipeline per video runs about $0.60-1.20 in API costs total.

Should you use it

Yes if:

  • You run a faceless channel and need consistent voiceover
  • You want to expand existing content into other languages
  • You publish more than 2 videos a month (the per-character pricing amortizes)

No if:

  • You record your own voice on camera and are happy with it
  • You're publishing under 1 video/month (free tier of any provider works)
