How to make faceless YouTube videos with Claude: the honest version

What Claude genuinely does well in a faceless video workflow, the real setup a serious DIY pipeline needs, what the API actually costs per video, and when doing it yourself is the right call.

Here is the honest answer up front. Claude can carry the entire writing half of a faceless YouTube channel: topic research, long-form scripts, titles, descriptions, and thumbnail concepts, at a quality level that tracks how much you feed it and how hard you iterate. What it cannot do is voice the script, source the footage, edit the video, or render anything. A serious DIY pipeline is Claude plus a voice tool plus footage plus an editor plus the glue you build yourself, and the realistic bill is tens of dollars in model spend and 10 to 30 hands-on hours per documentary-grade 10-minute video. We should disclose the bias before going further: we build CTRmaxxing, a faceless video pipeline, and we use Claude heavily inside our own production. This post is the version of the DIY guide we would want if we were starting from a blank folder, including the parts that are genuinely hard.

What Claude does well

Used properly, Claude is the strongest link in a DIY chain:

  • Research synthesis. Point it at a topic and it produces organized briefs, timelines, and angles far faster than manual reading. You still have to check the claims that matter, but the structure work is close to free.
  • Long-form script drafting. It holds a 1,500-word narrative together, keeps a through-line, and revises on instruction. This is the step with the most iteration headroom: you can push a draft through as many passes as you want instead of accepting a tool's first output.
  • Iteration on tone. Given examples of writing you like and concrete rules about what to avoid, it converges on a voice. This is the single biggest quality lever and the least used one.
  • Packaging. Title variants, descriptions, and thumbnail concepts are fast, and generating many options to cut from is exactly how packaging should work anyway.

Where it fights you

Two honest problems, and neither is solved by a better one-line prompt.

First-pass output sounds like AI. Every frontier model defaults to the same recognizable patterns: the contrastive framing, the hedged transitions, the over-symmetrical paragraphs, the phrases viewers have learned to tune out. A first draft is a starting point, never a script. Escaping the defaults takes explicit written rules, examples of what good looks like, and multiple passes per script. Chat has no memory of your channel. A fresh conversation knows nothing about your niche, your banned phrases, your hook style, or what your last ten videos already covered. Without a persistent setup, you re-teach your standards every session and the quality drifts. Fixing this is what separates a hobby workflow from a production one, which brings us to the real setup.

The real setup a serious DIY pipeline needs

Described generally, every serious Claude-based video operation converges on the same shape: set up a local project, build a knowledge base of what works in your niche, iterate prompts until the scripts stop sounding like AI, and stitch together separate tools for voice, footage, editing, and packaging yourself.

Concretely, that means:

  1. A local project, not a chat tab. Your prompts, drafts, research, and outputs live in files you version, so every video builds on the last instead of starting from zero.
  2. A knowledge base for your channel. Written rules for voice and structure, notes on which of your topics and hooks performed, examples of scripts that worked, and a list of banned patterns. This document does more for script quality than any model upgrade.
  3. Many prompt iterations. Expect to revise your instructions over your first dozen videos as you find failure modes. De-slopping is a process you converge on, not a prompt you download.
  4. Separate tools for everything after the words. A text-to-speech service for narration, stock libraries or your own clips for footage, an editor for assembly, and an image tool for thumbnails. Each has its own learning curve, subscription, and failure modes.
  5. The stitching. Moving a script into narration, narration into a timeline, footage onto the narration beats, and packaging onto the upload is manual work every single video. This glue is the part no one budgets for, and it is most of the hours.

What the API actually costs

Anthropic's published API rates, per million tokens, as of July 2026 (source): Claude Opus 4.8 at $5 input and $25 output, Claude Fable 5 at $10 and $50, and Claude Haiku 4.5 at $1 and $5. Prompt caching and batch processing can cut effective costs substantially for a disciplined pipeline.

What that translates to per 10-minute video depends almost entirely on how many iterations you run:

  • Documentary-grade, on Opus 4.8: deep research passes, several full script drafts, fact-check and line-edit passes, and packaging with retries lands around $45 to $90 in model spend per video in our modeled scenario, including a realistic allowance for dead ends. The same working style on Fable 5 roughly doubles to $90 to $180.
  • Bare minimum, on a small model: one research pass and two drafts on Haiku-class pricing is under $1 of model spend, and under about $5 per video all-in. The honest caveat is that single-pass cheap scripts are precisely the AI-sounding output that stalls channels, so this route saves cash by spending your odds.
  • Voiceover: ElevenLabs prices text-to-speech at 1 credit per character on plans starting at $6 per month, with the popular Creator tier at $22 per month for 121,000 credits, as of July 2026 (source). By our arithmetic, a 1,500-word script is roughly 8,000 to 10,000 characters, so a clean read uses about $1.50 to $1.80 of Creator-plan credits, and a few retakes lands around $3 to $6 per video.   • Footage: free stock libraries cover a lot of niches at no cost; paid libraries are a monthly subscription on top.

So the marginal cash cost of DIY ranges from a few dollars to low hundreds per video depending on how seriously you iterate. Cash is not the real cost, though. Hours are.

The hands-on time reality

Total: roughly 10 to 30 hands-on hours per documentary-grade video. A bare-minimum version still runs about 4 to 8 hours, and notice where the time sits: editing and footage dominate, and those are exactly the steps Claude cannot touch. The writing you automated was never the bottleneck on hours.

When DIY is the right call

There are real cases where building this yourself is the correct decision, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise:

  • You like the plumbing. If tinkering with prompts, files, and toolchains is fun for you, the pipeline is a rewarding project in its own right, and you will understand your channel's craft more deeply than any tool user.
  • You are making one or two videos, not a channel. For a one-off project, subscribing to anything makes no sense. Chat plus a free TTS tier plus a free editor gets a single video done.
  • You need full control. Unusual formats, a very specific visual identity, or editorial standards no general-purpose tool meets. DIY is the only path to exactly-what-you-want.
  • Your niche is the edit. If your format lives or dies on bespoke editing rather than script and packaging, you were always going to spend the hours in the editor anyway.

The case against DIY is just as simple: if the goal is a channel that publishes weekly, the pipeline itself becomes a second job. Twenty hours per video does not compound; it repeats.

If you want the output, not the plumbing

The alternative is a pipeline someone else already built, debugged, and keeps improving.
